CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“What was that?” Tallen asks, but I see he has a smirk on his face.

“Nothing,” Mirtha tells him with a scowl. She turns around to look at her door, and then back at us. Nodding, the old Fairy says, “Come. Follow me.”

With that, she turns around and flies away. Tallen looks at us and shrugs, then points to the small door in the tree. “Not like we can fit into her house.”

“True,” I say with a smile.

With Marissa and Carmen trailing me on either side, I keep up with Tallen, who follows Mirtha. After a couple of minutes of brisk walking, which I see is away from the Village, she finally stops in a smaller clearing. Here, I see, there are logs that have been cut lengthwise, and placed flat end facing up around a dead firepit.

Mirtha lands lightly on one of the logs and, pointing to the others, indicates we are to join her. Once we are sitting down, she looks at me. “Since you’re a Magus young man. Care to call up the Shield spell?”

“Hmm. Sure,” I say, nodding.

I place my hand on the ground and I cast Shield, making it large enough to encompass us and the logs. Once finished, I nod to her. “Done.”

“Impressive. I have not seen anyone cast Shield that quickly before. Yes, I would say that level is inaccurate. I would have pegged you at least level twelve or so.”

Tallen is the one to respond. “Well, if it helps, Kevin has not been fully tested yet. We figure his power is closer to level twenty, than level ten.”

With a squawk of surprise Mirtha turns her milky gaze on Tallen, as if to see if he was bullshitting her. When he simply stares back at her, she shakes her head. “Now, about the Stags. You are sure they’re back?” she asks him.

“Yes,” he says with a sigh. “Have you heard of the silver dagger murders?”

“Yes,” she says with a frown. “And you think they have something to do with it?”

“Kevin, show her,” Tallen instructs.

I nod and take out the silver broach—the one with the stag etched in black on one side, and the pin on the other.

Mirtha flies over, a curious look on her face, but the moment she sees the design on it, she sputters in anger. “Shit. Where in the seven hells did you find that?” she hisses, glaring up at me.

“On the body of one of the victims that had been murdered.”

“Hold it up for me?” she asks.

I do as she bids and hold up the broach. She flies over until she is hovering only inches from it and waves her hand over it. I’m careful to hold the broach steady, as I can’t imagine how much damage the silver jewelry might do if it touches the old Fairy. As she closes her eyes and continues to pass her hand above its surface, I feel Magic stir the air.

She sighs. “It’s real.”

“What do you mean?” Tallen asks her.

“We found a stash of these, years ago, in a warehouse.
